APPARENCES is a series of portraits
of actors or models, on early career,
posing on location, in prominent places.
I have a long history with actors. I first met them fifteen years ago at the Cours Simon, in Paris, when I was taking acting courses. I was one of them in a troupe playing in nursing homes for the elderly. Now, as a still photographer, I look at them on stage or film sets. Acting. What's more natural ? Children do it all the time.
“All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players…”
The whole world ... and especially the Louvre, Versailles, Fontainebleau ... To explore the share of acting in each of us, I wanted to put into perspective these places with young actors and mannequins - professionals of appearance - on the edge of their career. Asking them to simply "be" - to appear - in front of the camera.
"Apparence, or appearance, is the outward or visible aspect of a person or
thing, as opposed to what is deep."
I am trying to suggest this depth, to imagine what is hidden beyond appearances. For this, I favor an intimate approach: let the natural express itself avoiding the tricks of shooting in the studio, favoring available light, limiting digital retouching of the images.
Intimacy usually refers to the sense of close personal association with others. It relates to a familiar and emotionally very close connection, as a results of numerous common experiences.
Genuine intimacy requires transparency, reciprocity and incidentally some vulnerability.
The confrontation between those young people and places with strong past / uncertain future, seems able to generate this emotion.
APPARENCES will make full sense in a few years, when the models have progressed in their careers.
